Mr. August 2016 - Richard Ouellet & Don Lore

This month of the Sexy Men of YEG Food calendar is a particularly fun one for us at Edmonton’s Food Bank because two of our long-time, committed volunteers made the cut! Don Lore and Richard Ouellet have volunteered for the Food Bank for many years often coming in multiple times each week and doing whatever is needed that day.

Edmonton’s Food Bank relies on volunteers donating their time and talents to be able to fulfill our mission, and these 2 men exemplify the generosity and dedication of our family of volunteers.

Here is a little more about these two volunteer leaders.

1. Why participate in the YEG Sexy calendar for Edmonton’s Food Bank?
Richard – It seemed like a fun way to raise money for the Food Bank and be a “model for a day”!

Don – I was asked by Owen Petersen, the Prairie Mills Bakery owner, to represent the Food Bank in the calendar.

2. Where was the picture taken? Describe the day.

Richard – The setting is Hawrelak Park during Heritage Days 2015. We arrived at the Food Bank tent on a Hot August afternoon and after skillfully maneuvering the fork lift to a secluded part of the Park Don and I took off our shirts and tried to look sexy :) All those involved were great and we did have fun trying out different poses.

Don – The pictures were taken during 2015’s Heritage Days Festival in August. It was a bright sunny day

(Thanks to Bri Vos from Detour Photography and Patrick Kerby from Patrick Kerby Designs for getting such great shoots of Don, Richard and all the Sexy Men of YEG Food! Check their websites for more on their work.)

(Thanks to Food Bank volunteer Stan Mah for the behind the scenes pictures!)

3. You’re a food bank volunteer, what prompted you to start volunteering here?

Richard – I was looking for a way to give back to the community and the Food Bank provided me a great opportunity to do just that.

Don – I started in 1993 when I had some time on my hands and I asked a neighbour who worked at the food bank if there was something I could do there. She replied “boy do I have something you can do there” and I have been coming there at least once a week since then. I have worked at almost everything within the Food bank.

4. How long have you been volunteering and what roles have you done at the Food Bank?

Richard – I started at the Food Bank in August 2009 and I have worked on the hamper line, sorting, I have done special events where I have been Fill-up the mascot, accepted donations at concerts (Huron Carol is one of the most memorable) have been involved in the annual Christmas Tree sales since its inception, driving trucks for delivery and pick-ups and was the model in the 2009 Expressions of Hunger Interactive Photo and Literary contest.

5. What keeps you coming back to volunteer?

Richard – I am now retired and my volunteer commitment to the Food Bank just feels right.

Don – I enjoy working with the people there and the jobs keep changing.

6. What are some things that might surprise people about you and/or the food bank?

Richard – One thing that might surprise people about me is that I sang the role of Judas in the Grande Prairie production of Jesus Christ Superstar. What may be surprising about the Food Bank is the wide range of volunteer options that exist and the fact that whatever amount of time you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Don – How busy it is right now at the food bank.

7. What are the best things about volunteering with Edmonton’s Food Bank?

Richard – As noted above the range of volunteer options is a big draw, as well as the genuine support you get from not only the Food Bank staff but the other volunteers.

Don – The people, from the clients to the other volunteers.

8. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about volunteering here?

Richard – Nothing more than if you have time to give to a dedicated, hard working and incredibly valuable organization sign up at Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Don – Come and try us out, I think you will enjoy it.
