Edmonton’s Food Bank 2018 Client Survey Beyond Food - Revisited

In the time since the 2015 Edmonton Food Bank Client Survey the number of people requiring hampers from the Food Bank increased by 50.6% from 13,869 individuals in July 2015 to 20,892 in July 2018. Similar to the 2015 survey, 90% of respondents are Canadian citizens, 30% self identify as Indigenous and most are well educated, with almost 43% having some level of post secondary education.

“What is new to us from the 2018 survey and quite troubling is the data surrounding employment and income. In the three years between surveys there is a nearly 20% increase in the number of people whose income is less than $25,000,” says Marjorie Bencz, CM, Executive Director of Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Also noteworthy is that 45% of those who are unemployed have been out of work for more than three years. Of those who are working almost 60% are employed as part time, casual or seasonal. The number of respondents over the age of 50 jumped from 23% to 30.9% since the 2015 survey.

“Providing people with the support and skills to pave the way to more stable and higher paying employment is critical to changing these numbers”, says Marjorie Bencz. “We are pleased to hear that interest is high for the services of our Beyond Food program, such as safety tickets, job search support, English and Math upgrading.”
